Week 30

We have a logo!
Pretty sweet
As for the level, it's looking really good, though there's still a lot to be done before the DMU hand-in in 2 weeks - most importantly, Dominic needs to finish up the puzzle blueprints, and we need to finish the "dark world".

I haven't made any new assets this week. Instead, I've be writing my reflective writing essay for Critical Studies, and cleaning up my other projects to make sure everything is A-Okay for the final submission tomorrow.

I've also been working on making some emissive textures for the "dark world" level.

Tron trees
The idea is that all the vegetation in the level will have a subtle blue-ish glow. Making all the different bark textures glow is harder than I thought, as they all tile a lot. It's difficult to make it noticeable without completely overwhelming the trees.

Anyway

I've started making a bus, or specifically a camioneta (or chicken bus). They're converted American school buses driven to transport people in various Latin American countries.

I decided I wanted to make one after watching Dara and Ed's Great Big Adventure and seeing some on there, and I haven't made a vehicle in a while.

Wagons and Barrels - Week 29

There's only a couple of weeks left before the DMU hand-in for the Off The Map project, but still quite a lot for us to do. I've just been making assets this whole time, which I've now finished (again)! I still need to finish making the team logo, but apart from that, I've finished for now, unless I get to mess around with the level in engine.

This week, I made the wagon I concepted during easter, with a broken wheel, and a barrel. It was quite quick to make because it just uses a tiling texture, though that does mean the wagon texture lacks quite a bit of dirt detail and stuff.

Apart from that, I also took some decent renders of my 2 characters for the submission:

Week 28

I'm back in Leicester, so now I can actually see what things look like in Unreal

Characters and Wagons and Terrible Ideas - Week 27

The character project is finished! Almost. I still need to take some more renders for the resubmission, and add to the design document.

Here are some side by side comparison screenshots of the old and new characters. I refined the textures quite a lot, as well as adding an ambient occlusion map, and changed the topology a fair amount to make sure the mesh flows properly.

So, what else have I been doing? Well, I haven't quite forgotten about the Off The Map competition. I've been working on designing a little wagon to go in the forest, just as a set dressing.

We're going to go with something like number 2 at the bottom here! I probably won't start modeling it until after I'm back at uni, as I still have quite a lot of other work to do this week (*cough* presentation and essay *cough*).

In Other News

I planned to focus most of my time this Easter break on personal projects - unfortunately, with remaining uni work and having to move out, I haven't done nearly as much as I had planned. Still! There's 1 more week left, so I'm going to try and cram in some more work, if I can.

So far, I've started modeling a JCB - specifically a JCB 1110T. Well, that was a pretty terrible idea - who knew diggers were such complicated looking machines?

Still, I'll finish it. To an inspiring level? Uh, maybe.
